It’s only been open for a few months, but Shanghai Disneyland has already released plans of its first major expansion, which is expected to open at the resort in 2018.
Groundbreaking work has already begun on the area that will become Toy Story Land in just a couple of short years. This will be the fourth incarnation of a dedicated Toy Story themed area, after the already open Toy Story Land at Hong Kong Disneyland and Toy Story Playland at Disney Studios Park in Paris, and the upcoming Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. What format the new land will take isn’t entirely clear just yet, but early reports suggest it will be very similar (if not the same) as the upcoming Florida version, as it will be themed around Andy’s backyard. Three new attractions are due to be revealed, but whether these are completely new concepts or just new to the Shanghai resort is again yet to be confirmed.
The opening of a Toy Story Land in Shanghai isn’t exactly a major surprise – they do already have a Toy Story Hotel, after all. Disney are apparently pleased with the resort’s performance so far, and while the unveiling of a whole new land right now is probably sooner than most anticipated, it makes sense to capitalise on a buzz while it’s still relevant. If they’ve got the finances and the backing to do it, then why not?
Keep your eyes peeled for further developments, and I’ll be bringing you any more news I get on either of the two upoming Toy Story Lands. This certainly seems to be one franchise that Disney is still putting a lot of stock in, with the movie Toy Story 4 also in development, and it should be fun to see how this translates into theme park attractions in the years to come.
